On the Road Again - Willie Nelson
On the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is makin' music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Goin' places that I've never been
Seein' things that I may never see again,
And I can't wait to get on the road again.
On the road again
Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world be turnin' our way
And our way
Is on the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is makin' music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world be turnin' our way
And our way
Is on the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is makin' music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again
And I can't wait to get on the road again
So after a couple of decades (18 long days and nights) in the hotel room in Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, I finally took off the cast and hit the road again. A bit of pain still, but just couldn’t take it lying there anymore!!
Took a little practice run to Rose Blanche, about 50 miles/80km east of PaB to see how the leg felt.

Did ok, so I pressed on the next morning heading north to Stephenville. Met Jonathan (Coolhand) from ADVrider.com there for lunch. He had been advising me on several issues on Newfoundland and trying to help me with the leg situation. He gave me several pointers on where to go, what to see, and what not to miss. Was a pleasure to meet him, and as always, I forgot to get pics!!
Headed north from Stephenville to Gross Morne National Park Beautiful up there. Three fingers on the gas, two on the brakes, and always scanning the road for moose, as every person I met warned me about them and strongly advised not to hit one. None sighted…

A well deserved seaside break...

Self portrait...

Headed east to Grand Falls. Got in kinda late. Couldn’t find a room, so I stopped at a local watering hole to evaluate the situation over a brew, and met Dorothy and crew. Lively bunch there! Talk about the famous Newfoundland hospitality… guided tour of local nightlife, 1st class room and board, great company… Thanks girls!!
Headed to Terra Nova National Park the following morning, the long way as usual, via Lewisporte, and edging the coast of northeastern Newfoundland through Musgrave Harbour, getting back on the Trans Canada Highway close to Gambo. Got to Terra Nova NP to camp for the night.

Headed south next morning to St. Johns, again detouring and following the north coast of the Avalon Peninsula. Great views, small coastal villages, just gorgeous all around.

And yes, the 16 yr. old in me had to take this picture...

Got into St. Johns in the afternoon. All through my injury ordeal, David, a friend from St. Johns now living in California had been helping me with contacts and trying to solve my impossible situation by remote control from L.A. He was kind enough to put me in touch with his brother Greg and Lori, Greg’s girlfriend. They not only took in my limping butt, but toured me around, took me to dinner, fed me homemade food, turned me into a “Rock Star:Supernova” fan, introduced me to local music, etc. etc. The list goes on and on. Can’t put into words how welcome and at home they made me feel, and how nice it was to catch my breath at their place. Owe you huge guys!! That’s my buddy “Cee” in the pic with them, a character with a capital C.

People in Newfoundland are as friendly and welcoming as can be. I had heard of this before coming over, and was delighted to find out for myself how true that really is. Another thing David helped me out with, was to put me in touch with his uncle, Dr. John Angel. He was just amazing in helping me out with my gimpyness! He saw me at his office in a moments notice, checked the ankle out, set me up with a specialist, Dr. Noftall, in a matter of minutes. Dr. Noftall in turn saw me right away and checked out the bad wheel as well. Can’t thank them both enough!
While in St. Johns (the oldest city in North America, by the way) I had to go to Cape Spear, the easternmost point in the continent. One down, three to go…

St. Johns is a great city. Fun, colorful, lively. Just great and my pictures do it no justice.

This morning I left at 6 am for Lewisporte to catch the 40 hour ferry ride to Goose Bay in Labrador. Will be heading west from there on the Trans Labrador Highway to Labrador City, and then south from there…
See you on the road!!
